❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
What does The Barndo Nation do?
The Barndo Nation helps you go from idea to keys in hand by providing floor plans and engineering, nationwide kit packages (post frame, steel frame, and stud frame), and connections to licensed contractors for shell and turnkey builds where available.
How do floor plans work with Buckeye Plans?
Through our partnership with Buckeye Plans, you can choose a ready design or request custom plans. We can also provide 3D renderings and interior tours so you can visualize your home before you build. Visit Buckeye Floor Plans
What types of kit packages can The Barndo Nation provide?
The Barndo Nation can provide Post Frame (Pole Barn), Stud Frame (traditional), and Steel Frame kit packages. Once you have finalized your floor plan design, we can give you an estimate on all three types of kit packages.
What’s included in a kit package from The Barndo Nation?
Each kit includes the materials and components for the main framing and the exterior shell (wall and roof sheathing/panels) plus exterior trim for the shell. A full bill of materials (BOM) is included. Steel-frame kits include a BOM and erection drawings for your contractor.
Is labor included in the kit price?
No. Kit packages are materials-only. Installation is handled by you or your chosen local contractor. We can introduce you to builders in our network, but you always choose who you hire.
What’s the difference between post frame, steel frame, and stud frame?
All three can produce beautiful, long-lasting homes. Generally:
- Post frame is value-focused with faster shell timelines.
- Steel frame offers high strength, straightness, and pest/moisture resistance.
- Stud frame (wood) is familiar to many trades and can be cost-effective depending on market conditions.
We’ll help match the system to your goals, site, and budget.
Who’s responsible for missing or incorrect materials?
The Barndo Nation stands behind the kit package. If materials are missing or incorrect in your kit, we’ll make it right. If materials are improperly installed or damaged during construction, responsibility rests with the installing contractor.
Do you offer shell or turnkey builds?
Yes—through our growing network of licensed contractors in select markets. Shell packages typically include the dried-in structure; turnkey adds full interior finishes. Availability varies by location—ask us about your zip code.
Do your plans come engineered and permit-ready?
We can provide stamped engineering for most states and jurisdictions. Local codes and permitting vary, so we’ll scope engineering based on your site, loads, and authority having jurisdiction (AHJ).
How long does it take to get plans and a kit?
Concept plans can move quickly; custom plans and engineering typically take longer. Once drawings are approved and engineered, lead times for kits depend on framing type and supplier schedules. We’ll give you current timelines during your quote.
Can I DIY the build?
Many customers DIY portions (especially interior). We recommend hiring licensed, insured trades for structural work and all mechanical systems. Your local codes and lender requirements may also dictate when a licensed contractor is required.
Do you help with financing?
We can introduce you to lenders who understand barndominiums and construction loans. You’re free to choose any lender you prefer. Exact loan terms and approvals are set by the lender.
How do shipping and delivery work?
Kits are delivered to your site by freight carriers. We’ll coordinate delivery windows and unloading requirements (e.g., equipment on site). Remote or difficult sites may require special logistics, which we’ll plan with you in advance.
What affects total project cost per square foot?
Major drivers include framing system, roof complexity, porches/garages, site work (dirt, utilities, driveway), finishes, and local labor rates. We’ll help you create a realistic budget early so there are fewer surprises later.
